Non stop menstruation is a condition and has a medical name. That name is menorrhagia and is used to describe prolonged or excessive menstrual bleeding. Menstrual periods that are both excessive and prolonged is called hyper menorrhea.
Non Stop Menstruation
Each woman experiences menstruation differently. Those lucky women that actually have normal periods experience a flow that occurs each 21 to 35 days. These periods last 4 to 5 days and only produce 2 to 3 tablespoons of blood loss. A period may be regular or irregular, heavy or light, painless or painful, and still be thought of as normal. Menorrhagia refers to losing nearly 3 ounces or more of blood during your period or having a cycle that lasts longer than 7 days.
Other than non stop menstruation, there are other symptoms of menorrhagia. These include:
* Menstrual flow heavy enough to soak through one of more sanitary pads or tampons on an hourly basis for several hours.
* Needing double sanitary protection.
* Needing to change sanitary protection through the night.
* Periods that last longer than 7 days.
* Menstrual flow with large blood clots.
* Menstrual flow heavy enough to interfere with your regular lifestyle.
* Continual lower abdominal pain during menstruation.
* Fatigue, tiredness or shortness of breath.
There are many causes of menorrhagia ranging from a hormonal imbalance to uterine fibroids. It can be due to something as serious as cancer or as simple as stress. The only way the true cause of non stop menstruation is to see your doctor for tests. You will be given a general examination, give your medical and menstrual history, a physical examination, a pap smear, and various blood tests. You may even be given a vaginal ultrasound and/or endometrial biopsy.
There are various treatments for menorrhagia. You may be instructed to take iron supplements to help with anemia, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or oral contraceptives to regulate your ovulation and reduce the bleeding. There are preventive general methods to prevent menorrhagia. These include bed rest, not overdoing it physically, avoiding tension and anxiety. Of course, most of these are almost impossible to manage in your everyday life unless you happen to live on a beautiful deserted island surrounded only by calm and tranquility. However, you can have bed rest when you need it and that just may be enough to help you feel better.
Non stop menstruation can put a stop to life as you know it. The smartest thing you can do is follow your doctor’s advice.
